Nevada, the state with the highest unemployment rate, has thousands struggling to meet their basic needs.  Luckily the US government’s Lifeline program is offering free government cell phones in Nevada.  This program offers quality phone coverage.  Without coverage, unemployed individuals cannot receive call backs regarding jobs, and disabled individuals cannot contact their many doctors.  It also benefits low income parents so that they can keep in touch with their child’s school, daycare or babysitter.  Nevada Lifeline also helps out the homeless population in Nevada, allowing them to conduct job searches and call about resources that may be helpful to them.

The Lifeline Program was created to help low income individuals and their families. It is funded through the Universal Service Fund.

Nevada’s Lifeline program eligibility requirements are straight forward.  Households qualify based on annual income.  For example: a household of one can make no more than $19,058 annually.  Add $6,685 for each additional person up to a household of four, and after that only add $6,545 for each additional person.  If a household is already receiving benefits such as:

  • Food Stamps
  • Public Housing
  • SSI
  • Medicaid
  • Energy Assistance
  • National School Lunch
  •  Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
  • Total household income at or below 175% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines

Households can obtain free government cell phones (with discounted cell service plans) through Safelink, or discounted residential phone coverage through At&t. At&t service under the Nevada Lifeline program is as cheap as $4.75 a month! Safelink or At&t has three different options to choose from based on individual households needs.  To apply for Nevada Lifeline go to Safelink’s website for free cell phone coverage, or for residential service through At&t, Nevadans can call 1-866-901-0152.
